Hardly any of Disney’s animated fantasy films in recent years have been as well received as the Latin American-set adventure Encanto. An unexpected song from the musical even stormed the charts. Now the Disney film is being shown on television for the first time.
Fantasy without a magical main character: The Disney highlight Encanto is on TV today
At the center of Encanto is the Colombian youth Mirabel Madrigal, the lives in a magical house and belongs to a magical family. The problem: She herself is anything but magical. While her older sister Luisa is super-strong and cousin Dolores can hear even distant, quiet sounds, Mirabel has no psychic ability and is quite frustrated about it. But when her entire family is suddenly threatened, the teenager discovers that perhaps you don’t need extraordinary powers to change the world.

As a Disney musical, Encanto has many catchy songs penned by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Although the song “Dos Oruguitas” received an Oscar nomination, it unexpectedly became the piece “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (in German: Just don’t say a word about Bruno) became a chart-topper.
