One of the best Counter-Strike players of all time shows how you can get more out of your smoke grenades

In Counter-Strike 2, smoke grenades offer the potential for ingenious moves. The professional player s1mple shows you what a sample looks like.

Who is the person you are talking about?

  • 26-year-old Ukrainian Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyljev is considered one of the best Counter-Strike players of all time and has played for HellRaisers, FlipSid3 Tactics and Team Liquid in his career.
  • s1mple reached his career highlight at Natus Vincere (NaVi), whose team he has played for since 2016 and won some highly prized tournaments such as the Intel Grand Slam in September 2021.
  • At NaVi, s1mple was also named best player of 2018, 2021 and 2022 and was also a title contender in 2019 and 2020.
  • The Ukrainian doesn’t think much of Counter-Strike 2 yet. s1mple says you shouldn’t play the CS:GO successor at the moment
  • How do you get more out of your smoke grenades? Counter-Strike 2 brought a lot of changes – including a major overhaul of smoke grenades.

The Smokes now react to their surroundings. Objects and walls stop the smoke from spreading and shots even tear small holes in the cloud through which you can see your opponents. Another highlight of the new smoke grenades is how the cloud reacts to the explosion of a fragmentation grenade – it then disappears for a short time.

Many players take advantage of this and let fragmentation grenades explode in the clouds of smoke in order to be able to see their opponents for a short time and shoot them precisely. A clip from s1mple is now circulating on Reddit in which he shows an almost perfect execution of this tactic.

What makes s1mple’s execution so good? s1mple manages to pull a kill in every situation shown in the clip. He achieves this primarily through consultation with his team. He says it clearly every time the smoke is to be “broken” by an explosion, i.e. blown away.

This means that both s1mple himself and his team members can react optimally to the brief disappearance of the smoke and surprise their opponents. Before doing so, he always takes an angle from which he can see his opponents when the smoke disappears.

On the map “Mirage,” for example, he caught the rotating opponents when he broke the smoke in the window with a grenade that he dropped just a few meters away from him.

Recently, s1mple gave a glimpse into the life of an esports athlete and revealed that he has over 23,000 hours in Counter-Strike:
