One of the best comedy series since Brooklyn Nine-Nine

While the finale of the cult series Brooklyn Nine-Nine is still a long way off in this country, a new series in the USA has already inherited the popular workplace mockumentary.

Abbott Elementary isn’t just that one of the biggest comedy surprises of the yearbut also proof that US network television can still produce highlights.

In Germany, Abbott Elementary has now started directly with Disney+. All 13 episodes are available there for retrieval (and partying). If you fans of workplace sitcoms like Brooklyn Nine Nine, Parks and Recreation, Superstore or The Office, this series definitely belongs on your watch list.

Abbott Elementary is one mockumentaryin which a camera crew the experiences of different Teachers at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School follows in Philadelphia, mainly working on people of color. The teachers here work under difficult conditions, have hardly any financial resources and have to take care of numerous children from socially disadvantaged areas day in and day out. Most new teachers don’t last more than a year here.

For occupation or for College of Abbott Elementary include new substitute teacher Gregory (Tyler James Williams from The Walking Dead), who is actually overqualified and would rather have the job of principal and who is constantly making eyes at the narcissistic headmistress Ava Coleman (Janelle James). Incidentally, she only got her job through blackmail and loves to tease her subordinates.

Another main character is Janine (Quinta Brunson, who also created the series), a second-grade teacher who is passionate about her calling Passion, enthusiasm and naivety pursues. Her role model is the long-established and experienced kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), who is often annoyed by the inexperience of the young teachers. She’s one of those teachers you’re a little scared of when you see her.

Then there’s history teacher Jacob (Chris Perfetti), who wants to be hip and cool in front of his young students (which he mercilessly fails to do), and second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), who thanks to her Italian roots more often times their questionable relationships play around with necessary materials for the lesson to come – who sometimes fell off the truck.

A comedy series like Abbott Elementary only comes along every few years

Rarely do sitcoms manage to captivate viewers so quickly. Often it takes at least one season until Dynamics, quirks of the characters and insider gags established and the comedy can really unfold. Not so at Abbott Elementary. Here we get to know the characteristics of the characters and their relationships to each other right away.

She is equal parts one honest appreciation the hard work and passion that teachers bring to their protégés as well as bitter criticism on the ailing education system in the USA.

The genre of the workplace sitcom has produced a number of highlights in recent years. But none since Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been as exciting from the get-go as Abbott Elementary. She’s clever, honest, has great characters and is also damn funny. It’s not without reason that the ABC series was honored at this year’s Emmy Awards nominated for Best Comedy Series – and in four other categories. So it’s hardly surprising that a second season has long since been ordered.
