Brit John Cleese was made famous by Monty Python’s Flying Circus, but the pinnacle of his career is another series: Fawlty Towers ran for two seasons between 1975 and 1979. It was a sitcom about British narrow-mindedness, resentment and the hubris of a man who, after steps down and bucks up. After 12 episodes it was over and that was a good thing. Fawlty Towers wasn’t just one of the funniest comedy series of all timebut perfect and not a second too long.
This could change now.
John Cleese is working on a comedy hit revival
It was announced yesterday that John Cleese is working on a Fawlty Towers revival with his daughter Camilla Cleese. The series is produced by Rob Reiner (Stand by Me), among others. There is no broadcaster yet.

The main cast of Fawlty Towers
The original was about Basil Fawlty running the Hotel Fawlty Towers with his domineering wife Sybil, though he’s not at all suited to it – for example, because he hates people. The sequel will revolve around Basil’s relationship with a daughter he has long been unaware of. They want to run a hotel together, as Variety reports.
A Reunion with the original stars at the side of John Cleese is unfortunately unlikely. Connie Booth, with whom he created Fawlty Towers, has retired from acting. According to her husband, his serial wife Prunella Scales was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Andrew Sachs, who played the amiable waiter Manuel, passed away in 2016 at the age of 86.
A start date doesn’t have the Fawlty Towers revival yet. However, expectations are high. After all, it doesn’t happen every day that someone dares to continue one of the best series of all time with a gap of more than 40 years.
In this text, you’ll learn why Fawlty Towers influenced shows like The Office and has been ranked on leaderboards for decades.
