Daniel Day-Lewis gets caught between the two fronts in the adventure film

The story of The Last of the Mohicans goes back to the novel of the same name by James Fenimore Cooper, which was published in 1826. She belongs to the Leather stocking cycle about a white man who grows up among a tribe of North American natives and has numerous adventures with his brother, the Mohican Chingachgook. The Leatherstocking stories have been filmed several times, including in the GDR with Gojko Mitić.

The last of the Mohicans

In the American adaptation by Michael Mann we travel to the year 1757. The Revolutionary War is still about 20 years in the future. North America is a battlefield of colonial interests. Great Britain and France are fighting for dominance and are also using alliances with the long-established local tribes to do so. Nathaniel Poe aka Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) wants to stay away from both fronts. However, when he rescues the daughters of Colonel Munro (Maurice Roëves) with Chingachgook (Russell Means) and Uncas (Eric Schweig), he is drawn into the conflict.

Hawkeye falls in love with Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe). This leads him to cross the path of the Huron chief Magua (Wes Studi), who has sworn bloody revenge against Munro. Because Magua lost his family at the hands of the British.

Romance and violence go hand in hand in The Last of the Mohicans

Wes Studi plays Magua, a great and frightening villain whose toughness fuels the basic tension of the film. The Last of the Mohicans is an adventure film with several great love stories, natural panoramas and fateful decisions. Nothing is glossed over, as this adventure takes place in the middle of a war.

Personal ambition, hurt feelings and vindictiveness mix in a whirlpool of colonial interests from world powers. The trick of director Michael Mann and his team is that this mixture works, so that the extreme brutality of a Magua and the romance of the Munro sisters go hand in hand in this slim 108 minute running time. In this respect, The Last of the Mohicans is similar to James Cameron’s Titanic, which surrounds its love story with detailed depictions of death and ruin. So don’t miss this romantic-tragic epic on TV today.

The war series Band of Brothers, created in 2001 by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, is still considered one of the best representatives of the genre. But the follow-up series The Pacific and the newly released thematic sequel Masters of the Air are also exceptional stories in the Second World War.
