Martin “Rekkles” Larsson has been one of the biggest talents as an AD carry in League of Legends for years. With Fnatic he reached the finals of the Worlds in 2018 and also played his way to the quarterfinals in 2017 and 2019. However, he is now changing roles and becoming a supporter in order to develop further. However, his team puts him on the bench for now.
This is the situation around Rekkles:
In a video on Twitter, Rekkles now announced that he will change his position. As a supporter, he sees another chance for a career boost.
Switching to support comes as no surprise
What exactly did Rekkles say? In the video, the pro says that while he’s a really good AD carry, he’s reached a point where he can’t go any further. He has been in this position for 12 years and now is the time to make a change.
The best step now is to reinvent myself, to try something new. And I’m sure I can do that. […]. The game knowledge is there, the communication is there, frankly there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to do that.
Although he still has some training to do, especially with melee supports, he is optimistic that he can also play a support at a high level.
LoL is also an essential part of Rekkles’ life. In March, he said with tears that there was not much in his life apart from the game.
Does the decision come as a surprise? Not really, because Rekkles has experimented with supports in the past.
As early as January 2023 there were rumors that Rekkles could play as a supporter alongside Upset. Supposedly, the MAD Lions were also interested in Rekkles as a supporter in early 2023 (via Summoners-Inn).
It is also not uncommon for an AD carry to change its role to a supporter. Pro Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen also played on the botlane for teams like G2 Esports and TSM for years. He has been the supporter for Cloud9 since May 2022 and even became champion with the team.
The LoL legend Faker, on the other hand, has been playing in the midlane all his life and very successfully:
Rekkles will not play as a support for Fnatic for the time being
How does his team react to this? Fnatic is looking for a new AD carry to come in the “next few weeks”. It is also said that they support Rekkles in his decision to play support now.
However, he will not be in the starting lineup for the new season (via Twitter). It is not yet known whether Rekkles will be satisfied with a place on the substitutes’ bench or whether he will change teams.
2023 already held some surprises for the European LoL community. Here’s how a team won the spring split that nobody really expected:
