One of the best action films of recent years conquers the Netflix charts – but number 1 belongs to a surprise hit

At the end of the year, the film charts on Netflix are dominated by exactly two themes: Christmas and Harry Potter. While the first seven Harry Potter films are in places 4 to 10, Christmas actioner and surprise hit Carry-On has been holding the top position for days ‒ and is even on the way to becoming part of the all-time top 10 on Netflix.

There is only room for a few other titles in between. However, one film has managed to successfully sneak in between the two – and rightly so. Because it is nothing less than one of the best action films of recent years.

Just behind Carry-On, Top Gun: Maverick is conquering the Netflix charts

Two years ago, the success story of the 80s classic Top Gun with Tom Cruise was continued with Top Gun: Maverick. Joseph Kosinski not only created a box office hit that was worldwide almost $1.5 billion (via Box Office Mojo), but also a hit with audiences and the press. While the action hit enjoys a strong rating of 7.6 out of 10 points in the Moviepilot community, Top Gun: Maverick even has 96 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

This is what Top Gun 2 is about: After more than 30 years, first-class Navy aviator Pete (Tom Cruise) is back where he belongs: As a test pilot, he regularly pushes himself and the planes to their limits. But his indiscipline costs him dearly and he is transferred. From now on he is supposed to train young pilots around Rooster (Miles Teller), Hangman (Glen Powell), Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) and Bob (Lewis Pullman) for a dangerous mission.
