It’s been ten years since Henry Cavill first appeared on the big screen as Superman. He made his DC debut in Man of Steel and laid the groundwork for that DC Extended Universewhich, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, combines multiple films and characters into one universe.

In the past decade, the DCEU has grown by numerous offshoots. The Justice League was formed, the Suicide Squad was formed, and most recently we’ve even delved into the multiverse. However, there is one thing we never got: one classic sequel to the $260 million Man of Steel.

Man of Steel 2: Henry Cavill’s Superman will never get a classic sequel

Although solo films like Wonder Woman, Shazam! and Aquaman were expanded into separate film series, the DCEU has with Superman never found a wayto continue the story with a part 2. Instead, Kal-El’s story was told through crossover films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Back in 2013, director Zack Snyder revealed he had ideas for Man of Steel 2. He wanted, among other things, the DC villains Braniac and Metallo insert into the DCEU. Later, filmmakers such as Matthew Vaughn and Christopher McQuarrie were linked to the sequel. Even James Gunn is said to have received an offer.

But Man of Steel 2 never materialized died in production hell. Even Cavill’s cameo at the end of Black Adam, which briefly gave fans hope, turned out to be a dead end. A few weeks later, the big DC reboot was announced – with a completely new Superman.

Ironically, this Superman film is directed by Gunn, who, along with producer Peter Safran, also has the creative reins in directing the new DC Universe. Any hope for Man of Steel 2 is lost. Henry Cavill’s Superman era is finally over.
