Whether Fast & Furious or Red Notice, Dwayne Johnson’s filmography is full of elaborately produced mega blockbusters. That was not always so. Welcome to the Jungle is an action hit on TV today that shows the star in the early stages of his acting career. With handmade fight scenes and furious camera work the highlight is reminiscent of a The Rock that some have almost forgotten.

Action on TV: Welcome to the Jungle features almost forgotten Dwayne Johnson

Even the story is almost modest in scope. Debt collector Beck (Johnson) is to bring back the runaway son (Seann William Scott) of the shady Billy Walker (William Lucking) from Brazil. There he messed with the brutal mine owner Hatcher (Christopher Walken), but despite the danger to his life he strongly resists returning. Eventually, Beck must be the rebellious lad tugging tied up through the jungle towards the airfield.

The breathless chase through the jungle between Hatcher’s henchmen and powerful insurgents is by Peter Berg (Hancock) endlessly entertaining. The choreography and editing in particular increase the tempo, the action mostly gets by without pyrotechnical spectacles.

And she features a Dwayne Johnson that fans can’t find on screen today. A little harder, a little more serious. A little more buggy and human than the franchise machine some believe him to be today. Sometimes you have to travel across the jungle for such treasures.
