Amazon disappointed science fiction fans last year when it canceled the acclaimed series Periphery after just one season. Anyone who has taken Upload to their dystopian hearts can breathe a sigh of relief. The series was extended for a fourth season.
Upload season 4 is coming, but it will be the last
The sci-fi comedy from The Office creator Greg Daniels is getting another season, but season 4 will mark the end of Upload, as industry service Deadline reports. This ends the several-month wait for the future of the series, whose third season was released in November.
In the expectedly euphoric quotes in the press release, Daniels promises a “zsatisfactory conclusion” of his series. He also explains why an end after season 4 is right for him:
When I designed Upload many years ago, I planned the story over four seasons. So I’m excited to create the ending that the fans deserve and that the characters and creative team have worked towards. Upload is one of the best sci-fi series of the last few years
Upload is set in 2033 and is about the recently deceased Nathan (Robbie Amell), who, as is common in the future, is uploaded to a virtual afterlife. In the digital afterlife, he befriends the living customer service representative Nora (Andy Allo), who has doubts about Nathan’s cause of death.
In the list of the best sci-fi series of the millennium, which was compiled by the Moviepilot editorial team, Upload comes in at number 32. The reasoning is:
Upload started in the middle of the pandemic and rather involuntarily captured the unpopular virtual lifestyle by transforming digital ways of life into one cynical and at the same time optimistic vision of the future interwoven. It sounds complicated and contradictory, but that’s exactly what makes The Office creator Greg Daniels’ often deeply sad comedy so appealing.
There is no start date for Upload Season 4 yet.
