One million cats unregistered with the Swedish Agency for Agriculture

One million cats unregistered with the Swedish Agency for Agriculture

Fact: This applies to cat owners

On January 1, 2023, a change in the law came into force which entailed the establishment of a cat register.

To register your cat, it first needs to be tagged either with a chip or ear tattoo by a vet. You can also go to an ID tagger with approved training.

Anyone who has cats outside the household or for commercial purposes must register the establishment where the animals are kept.

Kittens must be tagged and registered before they are four months old.

Senior cats, born before January 1, 2008, do not need to be tagged.

One million cats are not yet registered

“Getting all cats into the register is a long-term effort, but I still want to emphasize that it is actually a law that whoever owns a cat must also register it in the Swedish Agency for Agriculture’s cat register. So if you haven’t done it yet, it is highly time to do it now,” says department head Anders Elfström in the text.
