It was also a successful year for brother Marijn. After a stage victory in the Tour of Poland – his first victory at WorldTour level – he also rode his first big tour in Spain. He went to the Vuelta full of expectations, hungry for victory. “It was very special to drive, but it didn’t always go exactly the way I wanted. I started with a very good shape, but crashed in one of the first stages. I had a good chance of winning a stage, so I wasn’t very happy with that.” Yet finishing the Vuelta was a valuable experience for him.
