    Former German federal president Horst Köhler has died 81 years old.

    Köhler “passed away early in the morning in Berlin after a short, serious illness and surrounded by his family,” the presidential office said in a statement.

    Köhler was a federal president in 2004-2010 when he unexpectedly resigned after criticism of how he spoke about Germany’s efforts in Afghanistan.

    In 1981, the economist Köhler joined the Christian Democratic CDU, he became secretary of state a couple of years later and was then involved in negotiating Germany’s reunification.

    In the early 1990s, he was a special financial adviser to Chancellor Helmut Kohl where he participated in the creation of the EU’s eurozone.

    Köhler has also been UN envoy and head of the International Monetary Fund, the IMF.

    On Saturday, Hamas is expected to release three more Israeli hostages, as part of the ongoing agreement on ceasefire between the terrorist group and Israel, Reuters reports.

    The three Israelis that are released are Yarden Bibas, Keith Siegel and Ofer Kalderon.

    Yarden Bibas is the father of the two youngest hostages that Hamas has taken. One of them, Kfir, was only 9 months old when he was captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

    At the same time, Israel will allow 182 Palestinian prisoners to be released from captivity. The Rafah transition between Gaza and Egypt opens to some injured military and civilians.

    So far, 15 out of 33 Israeli hostages have been released in exchange for 400 Palestinian prisoners. Negotiations on more release continue.
