A man was shot dead in connection with anti-government protests in Kenya on Friday, according to hospital sources. People had taken to the streets to protest the rising cost of living.
The protests had been announced by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who spoke at a rally in the capital, Nairobi. Afterwards, the police used tear gas against his caravan. Police also fired tear gas at protesters in the cities of Kisumu and Mombasa.
A man died of gunshot wounds at the hospital in Kisumu, according to hospital management. Two more people were treated for gunshot wounds.
Odinga has repeatedly called on people to take to the streets and peacefully protest against the country’s rampant cost of living.
In August last year, Odinga lost the presidential election to William Ruto by a narrow margin. Odinga claims electoral fraud was behind Ruto’s victory and that his government is illegitimate, but his allegations have been rejected by the country’s judiciary.
