REINDEER. A policeman opened fire in Rennes overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday during an anti-drug check. The suspect and the police officer were injured after a refusal to comply while a woman died of her injuries.
A drug control and a refusal to comply. This is what led to the death of a 22-year-old young woman on the night of September 6 to 7, 2022 in Rennes. It is around 1:15 a.m. when four police cars spot and arrest a vehicle as part of an investigation for drug trafficking. Two people are inside the suspect vehicle: the 26-year-old driver and his passenger. While the police officers of the Research and Intervention Brigade (BRI) block the car to be checked, the driver refuses to comply and rushes towards the police officers according to the first elements of the investigation.
Faced with the suspect’s attempt to escape, a police officer uses his weapon and opens fire in the direction of the car, according to a source familiar with the matter cited by the Parisian and RMC. The bullet hit the driver in the arm and ricocheted off the passenger, injuring her in the chest. The 22-year-old did not survive her injuries. The policeman hit by the car also suffered knee and back injuries and was taken to hospital.
Two investigations have been opened. One targeting the suspect driver for attempted homicide on a person holding public authority and entrusted to the judicial police. The second is up to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) which must carry out investigations to establish the circumstances of the use of his weapon by one of the police officers.
