The government will triple the allocations for climate compensation abroad.
That could be enough to reduce emissions by the equivalent of just under five percent of Sweden’s current emissions.
– This is not about buying oneself free, says Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari.
According to the Minister of the Environment, the aim is to make climate reductions where it is cheapest.
– Since in Sweden it is a lot of kroner per kilogram of carbon dioxide, we know that in various developing countries, you can get more reduced emissions for the same money, says Romina Pourmokhtari.
Projects underway in Africa
Several projects are now being finalized in Africa, among others, where they want to finance the transition to renewables. This could involve replacing diesel engines with solar panels or electrifying bus traffic.
Very roughly, the money could be enough to clean around two million tons of carbon dioxide, which is a little less than five percent of Sweden’s current emissions.
– This is not about buying oneself free, but about giving a lift to countries that may want to have high climate ambitions but do not have the financial opportunities or the skills to do so, says Romina Pourmokhtari.
