One arrested one clinging to life following midday shooting Police

One person was fighting for their life in hospital and another was taken into custody following a shooting in downtown St. Thomas Tuesday.

Police received multiple 911 calls around 4:30 pm about a disturbance at a home in the 300-block of Talbot Street, where officers found a 24-year-old with an apparent gunshot wound who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries , police said.

A suspect fled the scene before police arrived, but officers arrested a suspect on Hiawatha Street a short time later and seized a loaded handgun, said police, who didn’t release the gender of the suspect or the victim.

“The investigation is in its early stages and more information will be provided as it becomes available,” police said in a statement late Tuesday.

The shooting – the city’s second of the year – came just hours after police leaders from across the region came to the city to watch Chief Marc Roskamp be sworn-in during a change-of-command ceremony at the Joe Thornton Community Centre.

Investigators still haven’t laid charges in the Jan. 7 case involving an 18-year-old male who was shot inside his family’s home on Palm Street. Roskamp previously said significant police resources have been committed to the case and he’s confidant charges will be laid.
