According to Assen, there is a taboo on IVF, and in particular on embryo selection. “As if that’s messing with nature, but it’s not at all.” Assen also experiences that there is hardly any talk about IVF. “After I talked about it openly, more and more people came to me who also had their children through IVF, often abroad. It surprised me how many people deal with this.” According to her, it is leading in Dutch society that you have children. “That is why people who cannot have children naturally are often asked whether it is time for a first or second child.” Assen emphasizes that she is very grateful that her daughter was born, but she is disappointed about the restrictive rules in the Netherlands.
