The Omicron variant is a variant of the virus SARS-CoV-2, responsible for Covid-19. It was first detected in November 2021 in Gauteng province, South Africa. This variant has been classified as a variant of concern (VOC) by theWHO on Friday November 26, 2021 and baptized Omicron at the same time. It belongs to the line B.1.1.529 and has a significant number of mutations in its protein S, 32 exactly.

Several of these mutations suggest that the Omicron variant could be more transmissible and resist vaccines, because these mutations are present in other variants, such as Delta, which have these abilities.

The Omicron variant was circulating globally only a few days after its detection. China, Italy, Belgium, Israel are among the first countries where the Omicron variant has been detected outside of southern Africa.
