Van der Ham investigated abuses at UMC Utrecht on behalf of Zembla, a current documentary program of broadcaster BNNVARA. In April 2018, he wanted to film a public lecture at the hospital on patient safety. The woman who gave the lecture, a terminally ill patient who was the victim of a medical error, had personally invited Van der Ham. The hospital refused the journalist access to the room and said he would be allowed to interview the woman after the lecture. When Van der Ham was ready for the interview, he was arrested by the security of the UMC Utrecht and handed over to the police. He was held in jail for about six hours.
