This weekend, the Swede’s very own monument will be unveiled in his hometown of Trollhättan.

The last two years have been absolutely incomparable for the skating fan Nils van der Poel. First double WC gold in 5,000 and 10,000 meters in 2021 and then double Olympic gold in the same distances in Beijing 2022.

But if all the gold medals weren’t enough, the Olympic hero also struck with double world records in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The 26-year-old also managed to win WC gold in the all-round before ending his career prematurely in the summer.

In fact, van der Poel became the first Swede in 49 long years to win gold at the all-around World Championships, one of speed skating’s most famous events. The success has been monumental for Nils, who has also been praised to the skies for his unforgettable sports achievements that have become pure classics in Swedish sports history.

Here next, the recently retired skater van der Poel is current in the SVT program “Mästarnas mästare” and the recordings are expected to take place during the autumn so that the program will then be broadcast after the New Year. On Saturday at 1 p.m., Nils van der Poel’s very own monument will be unveiled in the city where he grew up and will now be immortalized. The sculpture that will pay tribute to the city’s son represents a skate and will be placed in a roundabout right by Slättbergshallen in Trollhättan, reveals P4 Väst.
