Olympic athlete found dead just weeks before Summer Olympics – he was only 18 years old

An 18-year-old surfer, Jackson James Rice, has died after a diving accident, his father said on Monday. Rice was selected to compete for the oceanic island of Tonga in kitefoil surfing at the Olympics later this summer.

The 18-year-old died in connection with a free diving accident. He passed out in the water, and could not be revived.

“I was blessed with the best brother in the whole world, and it pains me to announce that he is now gone,” writes his sister Lily on social media and continues:

“He was incredible at kitesurfing, and I know he had come home from the Olympics with a big, shiny medal. He had so many incredible friends all over the world.”
