Olof Lundh says what everyone must hear when Caroline Seger ends her national team career: “I hope that…”

She is one of Swedish football’s greatest in modern times.
Caroline Seger will be missing from the national team.
Now Olof Lundh says what everyone needs to hear about Seger.

Sweden’s greatest national team player of all time is now giving thanks. 38-year-old Caroline Victory leaves Blågult after a full 18 years and an impressive 240 international matches for the Swedish A national team.

Victory says goodbye

There have been a total of 14 championships since her debut in the European Championships in 2005, and she has been involved in securing two Olympic silvers and three World Cup bronzes in the national team jersey. Victory has not always been the best, but so incredibly important she has been as team captain and anchor in the midfield during a long, long time of faithful service.

Caroline has always stood up, given her utmost and showed her big heart both on and off the pitch. It is one of Swedish football’s truly great players who is now ending his national team career.

Lundh’s tribute

The TV4 profile Olof Lundh who has long covered national team soccer, now says what everyone needs to hear about Caroline Seger and her impact on the Swedish women’s national team.
“We must remember that the development in women’s football during the 21st century was enormous. The quality, pace and technology have developed rapidly. Despite that, Seger has been able to be relevant and set the tone when the Swedish national team has more often than not kept up with the world elite. It shows an attitude and a mental strength on top of the talent and skill,” he writes in his column on the Football Channel.

It is not only what she accomplished on the football field that Seger will be remembered for, but also her tireless will on the sidelines.
“Despite the efforts as a player, it is all the struggles on the side of the field in parallel with the playing career that impress the most. She quickly learned after some cocky performances before the European Championship 2005 how to act in the media, and has since been a guiding star for Swedish women’s football. Above all, she has never been afraid to storm the barricades with a banner in her fist – and really fight for rights,” writes Lundh in his tribute.
“One of Swedish football’s most important players and people of all time. Caroline Seger has dared to go against the grain and say things loud and clear without trembling at the meeting. In the media and internally in the football movement. It’s never comfortable, and she’s had to feel that more than once.”

Although she may not have had the perfect ending as Sweden just missed the Summer Olympics for the first time on the women’s side. Or that terrible penalty miss in the Olympic final in 2021 will live on for a long time in the Swedes’ memory – then the national team captain should be extremely proud of what she has achieved.
“Caroline Seger can look back on a national team career unprecedented in the history of Swedish football. Clearly she ends up on top in many ways and even if the punishment in Tokyo will surely hurt forever, there are few who can shoulder the responsibility like Caroline Seger”, admits the TV4 journalist.
“She will be missed around the national team, but it is the sport’s inexorable forward movement that means that even Seger’s time was up. I only hope that Swedish football somehow makes use of the knowledge, experience, courage and ability to climb the barricades in the important issues”.
