Although no name has yet been announced by the New Popular Front to enter Matignon, Olivier Faure (PS) says he is “ready to assume” the role of Prime Minister.
Olivier Faure at Matignon? Everything is still possible for the leader of the socialists who assured the press on Tuesday, July 9, that he was “ready to take on this role” if Emmanuel Macron called on him. While the left-wing alliance has been in full negotiation since the publication of the results of the legislative elections to know who to propose to the President of the Republic for Matignon, he nevertheless specified that this must be done “in dialogue with [les] “left-wing partners”.
No “claim to hegemony” warns Olivier Faure
While the resignation of Gabriel Attal was rejected by Emmanuel Macron on Monday, July 8, the identity of the next Prime Minister remains one of the questions most asked by the press to members of the New Popular Front, who do not all seem to agree. Mathilde Panot spoke of Jean-Luc Mélenchon for this position, while the leader of the rebels is not unanimous.
“I do not agree that anyone should impose their point of view on anyone. There cannot be for anyone a claim to hegemony, a desire to impose themselves on others without ever having any dialogue,” assured Olivier Faure. He affirmed that the only condition for the proper functioning of the New Popular Front would be that it works “by consensus and democracy”, by governing “week after week” and without “going through 49.3”.
How is the Prime Minister appointed?
Under Article 8 of the French Constitution, the President of the Republic is the only person authorized to appoint the new Prime Minister. This is a discretionary choice by the Head of State, without any special conditions. Logic dictates that the person chosen must gather sufficient parliamentary support to avoid a motion of censure. If a motion of censure is adopted by the majority of members of the National Assembly against this new Prime Minister, the government is then overthrown. It now remains to be seen who the new Prime Minister will be, and when he or she will be appointed, just like the other members of a potential new government.
