The oldest is the 87-year-old fantasy writer Alan Garner, who among other things wrote “Elidor, det gyllene landet” which ran as a summer holiday serial on Swedish radio. Garner is nominated for “Treacle Walker,” about a young boy who befriends a healer. Garner could become the oldest writer to win the British literary prize.

At the other end of the age spectrum is 20-year-old Leila Mottley, who is the youngest writer ever to be nominated. Mottley is nominated for his debut book “Nightcrawler,” which is inspired by a true story about police officers who sexually harassed a young woman in Oakland, California.

Other big-name nominees include best-selling American authors Karen Joy Fowler and Elisabeth Strout. The nominations also include writers from the UK, Ireland, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Since 1969, the Booker Prize has been awarded to the year’s best novel with English as the original language. The price sum corresponds to roughly SEK 600,000.

On September 6, the list of nominated authors will be reduced to six. The final winner of the 2022 Booker Prize will be announced on 17 October at a ceremony in London.
