Of all things, Marvel Rivals could solve a big problem today’s RPGs

Many role-playing games have a big problem and the hero shooter Marvel Rivals, of all things, could promise the solution to promise to says a former WoW developer.

Who is this developer? It is Chris Kaleiki. He mainly worked as a class designer at the MMORPG World of Warcraft for 13 years. In 2020 he founded the notorious studios with former Blizzard colleagues. He is currently working on the Fantasy RPG Legacy: Steel & Sorcery.

What is the big problem of modern RPGs? As he revealed in an interview with Gamesradar+, there was a topic in developing his new game that Kaleiki was particularly busy: meta-builds.

Within just a few weeks after the release, players have mostly discovered the strongest builds with which you are prepared for every situation. Such a meta is efficient, but can cloud the fun because you are encouraged to stay with the tried and tested instead of trying out new things.

Changing synergies for a changeable meta

How does Marvel Rivals address the meta problem? In Marvel Rivals there is synergies between heroes. For example, fight Thor and Storm on the same side, benefits Storm of new lightning skills. Thor, on the other hand, can be revived by a Hela if it ends up a death blow.

The developers of Marvel Rivals want to change these hero syngies again and again. So you don’t want to try to make meta-builds disappear, but always enable new ones. According to Kaleiki, this makes the difference:

The meta constantly changes for the player, so that the players have to constantly re -rate and think about it: ‘What is the best thing, what is the new meta?’ This is the only thing you can really do.

There should be no hero syngies like in Marvel Rivals in Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, but you still want to get momentum through new maps and seasons. In a season, for example, a crafting material could be particularly lush to stimulate new items and builds.

How do you feel about this topic? Do you always play after the meta or do you prefer your own thing? Like to write it in the comments.
