Of all people, Oppenheimer maker Christopher Nolan is grateful to the MCU and he has really good reasons

Oppenheimer is a front-runner for 13 Oscar nominations this year, and director Christopher Nolan may have produced the Dark Knight trilogy, but is otherwise known for preferring original material like Inception and Interstellar as a filmmaker. It is all the more astonishing that the master director is now positive words for the MCU’s blockbuster competition found.

In an interview with The New York Times, Christopher Nolan and his Best Supporting Actor Oscar-nominated star Robert Downey Jr. discussed their collaboration on Oppenheimer. It also covered other topics, such as the Marvel success story in the cinema:

I think that Jon Favreau Robert [Downey Jr.] Back then, casting Tony Stark was one of the most significant and consequential decisions in Hollywood history. This has ours [Film-]Industry sustainably changed. Now that we’re coming out of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re saying, ‘Thank God for Marvel movies.’ This was one thing that, looking back, everyone thinks was obvious. But [Favreau] took an enormous risk, [Downey Jr.] to be cast in the role.

Before he was cast in the very first MCU film Iron Man (2008), Robert Downey Jr. was considered an enfant terrible in Hollywood that many filmmakers preferred not to cast.

Christopher Nolan’s Marvel praise refers, on the one hand, to the influence his Oppenheimer star has, despite these adversities, 15 years later. On the other hand, he also recognizes that the big ones Marvel blockbusters helped cinemas through the Corona crisis. Their broad appeal to a large audience ensured that they lured people back to the screens.

Christopher Nolan recently revealed his weakness for a Fast & Furious film. Apparently the director can’t just surprise us with his films.
