As promised, Microsoft did release a new version of Windows 10 at the end of October. Stamped 22H2, this very discreet update is however content with minor improvements without bringing any new function…
Along with the release of Windows 11 22H2 (see our article), Microsoft did release a new version of Windows 10, also stamped 22H2 – 22 for the year, H2 for the second half. But without fanfare. It is indeed in the greatest discretion that the publisher began to circulate this update, on October 18, 2022, a few days after October Patch Tuesday, the traditional set of software “band-aids” that Microsoft distributes the second Tuesday of each month for all its products to close security vulnerabilities or fix bugs. A discretion which is explained by the fact that this new “big” version – the only one of the year – does not include any significant novelty. Which doesn’t prevent you from installing it if you’re still on Windows 10 – like most PC users today – if only to take advantage of small invisible improvements… Especially since, like the previous , this update is free!
What’s new in Windows 10 22H2?
Like version 21H2 released in November 2021, Windows 10 22H2 is therefore officially an important update. However, even if it is presented as a new “complete” version, with its name and its vintage, it does not bring any major novelty. And for good reason: on the one hand, Microsoft is now focusing on Windows 11, reserving its new functions and applications for this still young system; on the other, Windows 10, which was released in 2015 anyway, will in principle be discontinued in October 2025, probably when Windows 12 appears. The Redmond company, which is betting everything on Windows 11 at the moment by seeking to accelerate its adoption, therefore has no reason to enrich its “old” operating system, even if it is used much more than the new. Windows 10 22H2 is therefore simply a “maintenance” version.
Curiously, Microsoft gave no details about the content of this version, not even on the support site pages, contenting itself with mentioning security improvements, proof that we should not expect a revolution, but minor… Anyway, it will officially be the only – and the best – version of Windows usable on PCs incompatible with Windows 11, even if there are tricks to switch to the new system.
As with all Windows updates, it is best to go through Windows Update to install Windows 10 22H2.
