Nyköping’s detention center is bursting at the seams after police operations – 44 new places will soon open

The police in Eskilstuna recently said that the efforts the authority has made to tackle serious crime have yielded results. Police have seized weapons and drugs and have also managed to arrest several people with connections to criminal gangs.

– We have roughly 40 people in custody, compared to 20-25 in the normal case. Of these, 13 are linked to conflicts between criminal networks in Eskilstuna, said Christer Sjöqvist, acting head of the investigation section in Södermanland at a press conference.

Arrested in two places

The police’s work in Eskilstuna has increased the load on the county’s detention center in Nyköping. There are remand places partly adjacent to the police station but also at the detention center on Arnö. The detention center has a total of 39 places and receives detainees both with and without restrictions.

– The staffing situation within the correctional service is strained. We have noticed a higher influx of people in custody, says Jimmy Dickson, deputy director of correctional services in Nyköping.
