“If you take into account that the number of people living in the Netherlands is increasing, the suicide rate has been stable since 2019,” says researcher Renske Gilissen of 113 Suicide Prevention. “But five a day is still five too many. And sometimes you see that it does increase in certain groups or regions, such as Utrecht. It is difficult to say why. Suicide often involves an accumulation of several factors, and that’s different for each person.”
