Nuclear waste, Pichetto: it is irrational that every Region has storage facilities for low-intensity waste

Nuclear waste Pichetto it is irrational that every Region has

(Finance) – “I personally consider it irrational and a waste of public funds that each region should keep its radioactive waste in multiple sites. We are evaluating third-party locations and what to do”. This is what the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratinon the sidelines of the Forum Risorsa Mare created by TEHA Group currently underway in Palermo. “There are high intensity wastethose from the old power plants, which are almost all located in France and England and those will have to go to a geological repository – the minister explained –. Then there are the low intensity ones, those from hospitals and civil ones for example, which must go to a deposit for about ten years. We produce these every day and at the moment they are stored a bit everywhere”.

“So it’s not that there aren’t any deposits. In all the Italian Regions there are deposits. The evaluation to be made, for a question of rationality, is whether it is possible to concentrate”, he added. On where the minister pointed out that “if everyone refuses to have the deposit of others, at this moment each Region is keeping its own”.

On the topic waste in SicilyPichetto Fratin recalled the role of Commissioner entrusted to President Schifani: “The Region is currently moving forward with the waste plan. Waste that cannot be differentiated, cannot be transformed into raw or secondary material or recycled must go into waste-to-energy plantsso it will also be equipped with waste-to-energy plants”.
