The close relations between North Korea and Russia, which have been continuing for several months, have resulted in important cooperation and alliance agreements between the two countries. In the process, this series of agreements resulted in North Korea’s involvement in the war with Ukraine on the Russian front. The fight of North Korean soldiers against Ukraine on the Kursk front created important outcomes for the entire West, especially the USA. In addition, South Korea’s tense relations with North Korea were the last straw. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol gave an interview to the American magazine Newsweek and made harsh statements about North Korea.
“SOUTH KOREA WILL STRIKE NORTH KOREA WITH US NUCLEAR WEAPON”
In an interview with the American Newsweek magazine, South Korean President Yoon stated that his country has developed its army “against threats from the North” since the Korean War.
Yoon stated that the conventional capabilities of the North Korean army are “much lower” than the South’s, and that Pyongyang is “trying to increase its nuclear capability.”
Stating that according to some surveys, 60-70 percent of the South Korean public supports the procurement of nuclear weapons, Yoon said that the South’s possession of nuclear weapons “could cause Japan and Taiwan to also obtain nuclear weapons, which would pose a greater security threat in the region.” ” he commented.
“I believe it would be unreasonable for (the North) to decide to launch a nuclear attack against South Korea. If they do so, the nuclear-based South Korea-US alliance will immediately hit North Korea with a US nuclear weapon,” Yoon said. he said.
RUSSIAN-UKRAINE WAR
Arguing that Pyongyang’s sending of troops to Ukraine to support Russia “could endanger global security by escalating the war,” Yoon said that Northern soldiers gaining experience in war or Moscow providing advanced military technology to Pyongyang would have a “great impact on South Korea’s national security.” stated that it would pose a threat.
Emphasizing that they support Ukraine with humanitarian aid, reconstruction aid and other aid, Yoon said, “If North Korea’s intervention aggravates the conflict in Ukraine, we can first consider measures that will help defend Ukraine.” he said.
US-SOUTH KOREA NUCLEAR DETERRENCE PLAN
The USA and South Korea signed a joint nuclear deterrence plan on the margins of the NATO Leaders Summit on July 11 to improve cooperation “against North Korea’s increasing nuclear and missile threats”.
According to the statement made by the White House, Yoon and US President Joe Biden stated that the plan would contribute to “the maintenance and strengthening of the effective nuclear deterrence policy.”
In the statement, it was noted that Biden reiterated that he supported the US’s “expanded deterrence commitment” towards South Korea with all its military capabilities, including nuclear.
In his statement on July 16 after the plan was signed, Yoon stated that South Korea-US cooperation had increased to a “nuclear-based” alliance.
