Nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya damaged: “Extremely dangerous”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky writes on Telegram that Russia fired more than 60 drones and almost 90 rockets. The attack was directed at several regions across the country, the worst hit is the Kharkiv region in the eastern part of the country. – Unfortunately, there are restrictions on the energy supply in several regions of the country, mainly on the western bank of the Dnieper, says Volodymyr Kudrytsky, head of the state energy company Ukrenergo. Only one connection left to the nuclear power plant The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, was also hit by the attack, the Kyiv Independent reports. A power line connecting the power plant to Ukraine’s energy system has been damaged. – One of the electrical transmission lines operated by the nuclear power plant has been cut due to shelling, writes Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko on social media. The nuclear power plant, which was taken over by Russia at the start of the full-scale invasion, is supplied with cables from Ukraine. Currently, there is only one link left to the electrical system. – The situation is extremely dangerous and there is a risk of an emergency. If the last connection to the national grid is damaged, then the nuclear power plant risks an outage, says Petro Kotin, head of Ukraine’s nuclear power agency Energoatom. Fire at hydroelectric plant The DniproHES hydroelectric plant, also located in the Zaporizhzhya region and the largest in the Dnieper River, has also been attacked. However, the dam, which is Ukraine’s largest, should not have been damaged and there is no risk of it breaking, reports Reuters. “The station is on fire right now. Emergency services and workers from the power plant are working on site right now,” writes the state-owned company Ukrhydroenerho, which operates Ukraine’s hydroelectric power plants.
