Italy is ready: the day was held today at the Roma Eventi congress centre of the Italian Nuclear Association, an important moment of reflection on the Italian situation and, in particular, on the need for a new energy policy that includes e enhance our country’s skills in the nuclear field. There are several projects on fusion – ambitious, but concrete – in which Italy plays a leading role with their own companies and own research centers.
The conference was opened by the President of the Italian Nuclear AssociationUmberto Minopoli, who has launched a request to the political forces that the Italian Parliament implement three measures, in this legislature, which reopen, in a realistic and concrete way, to nuclear energy in Italy. In particular, he asked for: relaunching a national energy policy that would lead the country out of dependence and achieve energy security; approve a law that supports incentives and promotes the participation of Italian companies in international development projects and programs in the field of small and medium-sized SMR (Small Modular Reactor) reactors; create, as per European obligation, the national repository for radioactive waste.
The Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, in the greeting sent to the AIN day, he underlined how “following choices that date back 35 years ago, our country has decided to eliminate nuclear production”. “I am convinced” – Urso wrote again – “that the new international context creates the right conditions to address a reflection on the issue in a pragmatic and non-ideological way”.
The president of Federacciai Antonio Gozzi he illustrated the path of the Italian steel industry, which aims to participate in the new construction of European nuclear power plants in exchange for energy at a controlled cost for the hard-to-abbot sector, fundamental for the development of the country system. “This energy crisis” – said Gozzi – “is widening the gap in competitiveness between the Italian and German and French steel industries due to the increase in the difference in the cost of energy”.
For Giuseppe Zollino, professor of Technique and economics of energy and nuclear plants at the University of Padua, in the future there will always be a greater demand for electricity. Studies show that any energy mix that also considers nuclear power is cheaper than a mix that excludes it.
At the round table in which they participated Maurice Partridge, Director of ISIN (National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection) and political exponents Giulia Pastorella, Deputy for Action, Nicola Irto, Senator of the Democratic Party, Erica Mazzetti, Deputy of Forza Italia and Paolo Arrigoni, Energy Manager of the League emerged, in a bipartisan way, the willingness to start a parliamentary debate to analyze the three points illustrated in the introductory report by the President AIN Minopoli. The Deputy Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Vannia Gava he reiterated the need to accompany the ecological transaction with an environmental culture that goes beyond the fears of the past, investing in the future and in new technologies.
The day continued with the panel discussion dedicated to Italian companies that presented their skills and activities in the nuclear sector. Marco Enrico Ricotti, Full Professor of Nuclear Plants at the Milan Polytechnic, then spoke, reiterating the centrality of Italian research in nuclear fusion projects and Small Modular Reactors.
