NoWay speaks openly about tax evasion to Madeira – “If you don’t do it, you’re stupid”

German influencers will quickly move their residence to Madeira in the last weeks of 2023, because in Portugal content creators can still secure a long-term tax advantage for a short time, which will save them a considerable amount of money. One of the biggest German gaming streamers on Twitch, the LoL streamer NoWay, is now explaining why he stays in Germany even though he would save so much money in Madeira.

That is the situation:

  • It has long been known that German content creators, especially in the gaming sector, are drawn to the Portuguese island of Madeira. YouTuber Simon Unge in particular is closely associated with Madeira.
  • But especially in the last weeks of 2023, there was a hectic hustle and bustle among German-speaking Twitch streamers to get to Portugal quickly. For example, we reported on the streamers LetsHugo and ELoTRiX.
  • The appeal of Madeira is, among other things, due to a regulation that expires on January 1st, 2024 and which allows streamers to save massive amounts of taxes when they move to Portugal. We have presented the whole principle in detail in an article on MeinMMO.
  • Madeira beckons:

This is what NoWay says: 31-year-old Frederik “NoWay” Hinteregger is one of the biggest German streamers ever. If you look at the watch time of the last 365 days, NoWay is in third place behind Eliasn97 and Papaplatte. He streams almost exclusively the MOBA League of Legends.

When his fans asked him about the appeal of Madeira for German content creators during a game with Teemo, he left the tax issue aside for the time being.

    NoWay explains:

  • Madeira is attractive for streamers – it has good infrastructure, good internet and is relatively cheap
  • You can also leave the house there without being recognized on every corner – this is especially nice for female streamers, who don’t have to worry about “weird stalkers”.
  • But then viewers ask specifically about the tax issue. A viewer says the regulation is ending and NoWay agrees:

“Yes, that’s why everyone who wants to emigrate to Madeira is now emigrating to Madeira, because from 2024 what is being done now will no longer be possible.”

Streamer shows a lot of understanding for people who emigrate

How does NoWay see this? NoWay has a lot of understanding for streamers who emigrate to Madeira. He doesn’t see this as “tax evasion”, but rather as tax evasion or tax optimization.

Anyone who moves to Portugal in time will have enormous tax advantages for 10 years. For influencers with a short-lived career, this is practically “for life.”

    NoWay then explains matter-of-factly:

“At the end of the day, it’s one of those things: it just makes a lot of mathematical sense to do it and that’s why a lot of creators will use it. You’re not tied to working from anywhere. You can move freely. Most of them have already paid hundreds of thousands in taxes. “We’re most likely going to have a very, very short career that could end at any time.”

In response to an answer from the chat that it was completely anti-social, NoWay said that you could see it that way. But you save 45% to 50% of the taxes and maybe 2% to 5% of the community would blame you and no longer support a streamer who moves to Madeira:

“It’s a very, very simple mathematical calculation for anyone who does this, what you’re doing. So people always look up and complain about people, but then you look at the really big tax evaders and nobody cares. So I think if you’re in that position, actually you’re just stupid not to do it.”

He says clearly: Given the current situation, it would be “just plain stupid” not to do it.

NoWay says he remains a Germany – can give something like that back

Then why doesn’t he do that? Although NoWay spends so much time explaining why it’s worth moving to Madeira, it’s not an option for him.

    NoWay says:

  • He enjoys living in Germany and his family, who are tied there, are very important to him. He couldn’t “re-loacate” them
  • He is already very tall and has a good salary – although not as big as would be possible for his size, some comparable big streamers would have laughed at him for his earnings. But his income was enough for him.
  • He could give something back in this way, i.e. by paying taxes, and it would be “fine for him”
  • He doesn’t care much about money anyway. He prefers to gamble because it doesn’t cost much money: “But I also have a lifestyle that isn’t too extravagant. I just want to sit in my basement and nerd out and you can do that anywhere and it’s not expensive.”

Trymacs makes it clear: you can’t win

What does Trymacs say? Variety streamer Trymacs also commented on the topic of tax evasion in a recent stream. He uses it as an example of how you can’t please viewers:

  • When he says he likes to stay in Germany and pay taxes, he is accused of being a “systematic.”
  • If he talked about moving to Madeira and running away, he was an anti-social tax fugitive
