A few days ago, NCIS fans received the disappointing news that the spin-off NCIS: Hawaii is canceled after only 3 seasons. The series was not only characterized by its special setting. It was also the first spin-off of the crime franchise to have a team led by a woman.
Now NCIS home broadcaster CBS has explained its decision to say goodbye to the spin-off starring Vanessa Lachey.
The ratings were too bad and the costs were too high: That’s why NCIS: Hawaii was canceled
As Variety reports, CBS officials said during a press conference in Los Angeles that NCIS: Hawaii had poor ratings for the network while incurring high production costs:
We need to keep the program fresh and keep the momentum going. We had to make some difficult decisions this year. We have come back strong after the Hollywood strikes, but we need to ensure the cohesion of the program. We have to evaluate the finances and the quotasand we have to make tough decisions.

While CBS has brought canceled series like SWAT back from the hit list in the past, this is the case for NCIS: Hawaii no option. CBS CEO George Cheeks also considers the change of format to the streaming service Paramount+, as was the case for SEAL Team or Evil, to be unlikely:
Budgets are being challenged and we don’t have an infinite number of slots on Paramount+. This is something we are always open to, but it is never guaranteed.
The third season of NCIS: Hawaii got off to a strong start on CBS with an average of 5.7 million viewers. The following episodes fluctuated between 4.8 million and just over 5 million viewers. Against the high budget of the series, which is partly the case real locations in Hawaii was filmed, but could not withstand these strong ratings.

The third season of NCIS: Hawaii is currently running in the USA on CBS. The grand finale is scheduled to take place there on May 6, 2024 be broadcast.
