Now the record-long carpet is being inaugurated – for Sala’s 400th anniversary

On April 15, 2024, it will be 400 years since King Gustav II Adolf issued city privileges for Sala.

About 100 people, half of whom are school children, have helped weave a 335.8 meter long carpet. They have woven different lengths of each and tied the parts together.

– We believe it is the world’s longest handwoven red carpet. We haven’t found anyone nearby when we’ve done our research, says Elvira Matz, project manager for Sala’s 400th anniversary.

Lucas Redén, 12, has contributed around one meter of carpet at school. Birgitta Bäckström, 76, has woven six metres.
