Tomb Raider is one of the most popular video game brands. No wonder Hollywood has twice attempted the Adventures of Lara Croft to bring to the screen. In the 2000s, Angelina Jolie played the action heroine in two films before Alicia Vikander took over with the 2018 reboot.
Despite the announced sequel, which has been planned in recent years with various filmmakers (including High Rise director Ben Wheatley and Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green on the director’s chair), the series with Vikander will not be continued. The studio MGM has lost the Tomb Raider rights.
Failed action sequel Tomb Raider 2 starring Alicia Vikander isn’t coming
As reported by The Wrap, a new film would have been released by May this year to get the green light. However, since Tomb Raider 2 didn’t get off the ground, MGM missed an opportunity to expand the brand under its umbrella. Now other studios are trying to get the rights. The next reboot with a new Lara Croft seems inevitable.

Tomb Raider – Trailer (German) HD
The first Tomb Raider film starring Vikander grossed $275 million worldwide on a budget of around $100 million. Not a flop, but not a high-flyer either: However, the numbers were not optimal for the start of a row. Especially since the film only reached 58 million US dollars in its home country, the USA.
Now we can be curious to see which studio will secure the rights. An animated Tomb Raider series is already in development at Netflix. The streaming service invests a lot in this area. After Resident Evil and Arcane were recently published, adaptations of Assassin’s Creed and BioShock are planned for the future. Tomb Raider would fit perfectly into the offer.
