For years, various studios have been trying to get a new real-life movie out of the Masters of the Universe franchise. Netflix started the last attempt. Vain. As we recently reported, the streaming service gave up the filming and gave it away at least $30 million. The end of the story? No, there is hope and it has been reinforced thanks to Barbie.
Mattel wants to push the Masters of the Universe movie because Barbie is doing so well
The age of the toy film is just beginning: Barbie with Margot Robbie is eating record after record. Mattel seems to have encouraged that. The toy company partnered with Warner for the Barbie film. As Variety confirms in a report, Mattel is looking for a Netflix replacement to somehow implement Masters of the Universe after the streaming company’s departure.
Masters is one of many toy projects the company is pushing. A Hot Wheels movie, a Polly Pocket movie, and a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie starring Vin Diesel are all said to be in development.
The Netflix film was already well advanced: can the new attempt build on it?
According to insider information, the Masters of the Universe project is said to have swallowed up more than 30 million dollars. A leading actor was found in Kyle Allen. He has already received his fee. According to the Variety report, this also applies to directors Adam Nee and Aaron Nee.
However, it is not known exactly how far the production had progressed. Likewise, whether the contracts of the obligated persons are still valid. A new studio, such as Warner, might have very different ideas about a Masters film adaptation. So it remains exciting.
