European Union (EU) member countries gave the final approval in October to the legal regulation that will make it mandatory to use USB-C charging ports in all electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and cameras sold in 2024. However, the exact date of when the law would come into effect was unknown. But today, a surprising news appeared in the US press. Accordingly, we now have a date.
THE DATE WAS GIVEN FOR THE USB-C DECISION
The EU has set a deadline of 28 December 2024 when new phones sold in the European Union, including future iPhones, will need to use USB-C for wired charging, tech news site The Verge reports.
In the news, it was stated that “The new USB-C legislation of the EU has been published in the Official Gazette of the bloc and has become officially binding” regarding the reason for this date.

EU’S UNIFORM CHARGING REGULATION
According to the regulation, the new standard charging port in portable electronic devices will be USB-C. All new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable video game consoles, speakers, keyboards, etc. will have a USB-C charging port. Thus, a single charger can be used in various electronic devices. There will be no need to purchase cables and chargers for new device purchases. Existing cables and chargers can be used in different devices. The regulation will expand to include laptops in 2026.
IT WILL AFFECT APPLE BUT iPHONE 15…
Currently, most Android devices are charged via the USB-C port. New laptops with headphones and various other accessories also use the same jack. The regulation is expected to affect Apple in particular. Apple uses a different input called lightning on its smartphones, some tablets and headphones. The company prefers USB-C input in its new iPads and laptops.
The allegations show that Apple plans to switch to USB-C with the iPhone 15, which will be released in September 2023.
