Barbie
Long before publication Barbie became a pop culture phenomenon, which was due, among other things, to the fact that it was released at the same time as Christopher Nolan’s dark atomic bomb drama Oppenheimer. Posters for the double feature “Barbenheimer” made the rounds.
When the film started, fans showed up in many places wearing pink clothing. This is how Barbie developed into world’s most successful film in 2023, with grosses to date of $1.4 billion. In Germany alone the film was seen by 5.2 million viewers.
Barbie 2 remains a mystery
The story of Barbie doesn’t demand a sequel, but it does in the context of today’s Hollywood business Barbie 2 seems inevitable. Despite this, the film has not yet been announced. Warner Bros.
Barbie
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, studio Warner Bros. tried to secure the stars for the sequel several months before Barbie’s theatrical release. This is actually common for franchise films of this type. Yes neither Greta Gerwig nor Ryan Gosling nor Margot Robbie agreed to it. In retrospect, this turns out to be smart from a financial perspective, as they would be in a stronger negotiating position due to the film’s enormous success.
So far there is no evidence of negotiations, which could be due, among other things, to the double strike in Hollywood. Neither actors nor authors are currently allowed to enter into negotiations with studios that are on strike.
