Now once again the country’s schools are filled with children and young people. But this also increases the risks of getting rid of important and valuable items, warns the Theft Prevention Association (SSF).

“It is important to talk to your children and young people about what is prone to theft and inform them of what to think about. Partly to increase awareness among young people about the risk of getting rid of their belongings, but also to bring in a crime prevention mindset,” says Lina Nilsson, counseling expert at SSF in a press release.

Last year, 4,584 thefts were reported in schools and leisure centers in the country. That means 500 thefts a month during the periods the children are at school.

Now schools start again after the summer holidays and students bring valuable items such as bicycles, mobile phones, bank cards, computers and branded clothes.

Some of the valuables are – in addition to being prone to theft – also easy to lose or forget in various places during the school day.

Parents and insurance companies are forced to pay large sums to replace the valuables. For example, having to change the locks at home due to lost or stolen keys is both time-consuming and expensive.

For a student who has lost his computer, schoolwork is also negatively affected, SSF points out.

Facts

This is how you prevent theft at school

Do not put valuables, payment cards or money in the backpack or bag. They should be worn close to the body.

Do not leave valuables in school lockers, locker rooms, or hanging in the hallway, but bring them into the classroom or gymnasium.

Label expensive clothes with names, like in preschool.

Teach children to lock the bike to the frame with a certified lock to a solid object.

Get key fobs for the keys so that they can be put in the mailbox and recovered if they are lost.

Read with your children about online safety to reduce the risk of them being exposed to fraudsters on social media.
