There is exciting news from the NCIS universe. At the beginning of the year we reported that a… new spin-off of the successful crime series is under development. It is a prequel that tells the backstory of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Now it is clear who will embody the character.
Gibbs is one of the central NCIS characters and was originally portrayed by Mark Harmon in the main series. From 2003 to 2021 he was in a total of 418 episodes to see and investigate in a wide variety of cases. Now we get to know his successor or predecessor: the American actor Austin Stowell.

As reported by Variety, Stowell has been cast and stars as the lead of NCIS: Origins from now on young Gibbs. Stowell already has several film and series projects behind him. He is known, among other things, from George Clooney’s Catch-22 series. He has also appeared in films such as Bridge of Spies, Whiplash and Battle of the Sexes.

Gibbs in NCIS: Origins marks Stowell’s biggest role to date. He’s not a complete stranger to the franchise. Back in 2010, he appeared as a supporting actor in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles. Specifically, he is in the 4th episode of the 2nd season to see. But at that time he was in a completely different role, namely as Marine Corporal Andrew Peterson.
Additionally, NCIS: Origins features a return that many NCIS fans should be looking forward to. Three years after his departure from the parent series, Mark Harmon returns. However, he will probably not appear in front of the camera or only briefly. In NCIS: Origins he primarily functions as Narrator of the story.
This story is set in 1991, several years before the events of NCIS. Gibbs is still at it beginning of his career. However, it isn’t long before he meets another NCIS legend: Mark Franks. In the original this was played by Muse Watson. The young casting has not yet been revealed.
When does NCIS: Origins start with young Gibbs?
There is currently no specific start date for NCIS: Origins. But CBS has directly ordered a season for the 2024/2025 season. This means that we can probably expect a launch in September/October.
