Grey’s Anatomy was carried on the shoulders of lead actress Ellen Pompeo through 19 seasons. The hospital series broke records in TV history. It’s an open secret that the actress who started it all kept thinking about leaving after such a long time. It was already announced in the summer that she would only appear in 8 episodes of the new season. In episode 5 (When I Get to the Border), the series now reveals how Meredith says goodbye. (Warning, spoilers for season 19 follow.)
Season 19 reveals the plan for Meredith Grey’s Anatomy progression
Ellen Pompeo is not quite gone yet, but the preparations are in full swing and can no longer be overlooked in season 19. The start of season 19 already dared to restart the series with new young doctors and a changed hospital. Having introduced the new Grey’s Anatomy generation, Meredith can now clear the field. And episode 5 already reveals everything we need to know about it: Meredith does not die but goes to another hospital.

In the storyline of Grey’s Anatomy it works like this: Meredith’s daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) has recently turned out to be highly gifted. She needs a place where she can be properly nurtured and not constantly focus on her fears that her mother (like her mother Ellis Grey) might get Alzheimer’s. When Meredith visits Avery (Jesse Williams) in Boston with Zola Jackson in episode 6, he offers his ex-colleague a research position, to maybe cure Alzheimer’s someday. Mother and daughter agree that they to Boston relocate want.
This serial trick of a character farewell by moving to another city has already been used in Grey’s Anatomy for several characters. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), Jackson Avery and Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) went in a similar fashion.

After years of series creator Shonda Rhimes publicly insisting that the hit TV show would end when its leading lady, Ellen Pompeo, got tired, it’s now clear that
Grey’s Anatomy will continue without Meredith becomes. For how long, the ratings will probably show.

Grey’s Anatomy: Meredith is leaving in season 19
It should be clear at this point: Ellen Pompe’s departure does not have to be goodbye forever. Maybe it’s a test run of how Grey’s Anatomy works without Meredith Grey. Maybe she’ll come back in later seasons for guest appearances or even longer. Will the temporary farewell end up becoming a permanent one?, the series creators are not revealing at this point. What is certain, however, is that it is a farewell that will change the series.
It is not yet known when Grey’s Anatomys season 19 will start in Germany on Disney+, JoynPLUS and ProSieben. A return to German screens is likely Spring 2023.
