Now it was a wrong forecast

The weather warning did not appear.
Now SMHI comments on the snow chaos in Skåne.
– Now it was a wrong forecast, Marie Staerk, meteorologist for P4 Malmöhus.

During Wednesday, large amounts of snow fell in southern Sweden. Several traffic accidents occurred and the E22 and E6 were stopped for a long time. It was wind combined with snowfall that caused it.

Trucks got stuck and long queues were formed, and the Swedish Transport Agency sent tracked wagons to Uddevalla and Stenungsund to assist the emergency services.

Explains why SMHI did not warn

In SMHI’s weather forecast, they had not predicted so much snow in Skåne. That is the explanation why only a yellow warning was issued for parts of Skåne.

– Now it turned out to be an incorrect forecast, in that there was significantly greater amounts of snow in this area than our forecasts showed, says Marie Staerk, meteorologist at SMHI, to P4 Malmö house.

If the forecast had been clearer, SMHI would have issued a warning for all of Scania. Marie Staerk did not think there would be any direct consequences.

– It was a very fast course, that is, a fast course of weather, that’s why we didn’t issue any warning when it happened, but it was that it passed so quickly, she says to the radio.
