It’s finally here, the new Indiana Jones movie. Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm, it was clear that the iconic archaeologist returns to the big screen in another adventure. Nevertheless, it took a surprisingly long time for Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny to take concrete shape. In March 2016, the Harrison Ford sequel was announced. Now it’s finally starting in cinemas.
How good has the new Indy turned out after all these years of waiting? The Reviews are divided. Even at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, The Wheel of Destiny caused very different reactions. At Metacritic he currently comes to 57 out of 100 percent. Rotten Tomatoes has 66 percent positive reviews. We’ll tell you for whom the film is worthwhile … and for whom it isn’t.

Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny comes with a clear promise. Even if the franchise goes on in the future, this is Harrison Ford’s final appearance as Indiana Jones. He has embodied the legendary cinema hero since 1981. At the end we get both the young and old versions of the character to face – once digitally rejuvenated and once according to the current Harrison Ford.

The story begins in 1944 during World War II. Indy is on a secret mission in the French Alps to recover a powerful object from the Nazis: scientist Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) is after the Wheel of Fate, a fictionalized version of the Mechanism of Antikythera acts, which goes back to the mathematician Archimedes.
This is followed by a jump in time to 1969. The USA has won the space race. For the old-fashioned Dr. Nobody cares about Henry Jones Jr. anymore. Where once the students could not avert their eyes, now nothing more than a tired yawn awaits them in the auditorium. But then his bursts Goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) into the film and involves Indy in another adventure.

Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny sees itself as a big farewell performance and entertaining summer blockbuster that leads around the world and a Best of the Indy series delivers. With the horse through the New York subway, with the tuk tuk through the streets of Tangier: two cool car chases ensure action, while several parties are after the MacGuffin.

Riddles are cheerfully solved between fraud and betrayal. Indy and Co. dive to a shipwreck, explore a cave and experience an absolutely disgusting scene with everything that crawls and flees in the dark. Director James Mangold rarely hits the brakes. His Indiana Jones film is constantly in motion and just like Steven Spielberg’s predecessor rich in snappy sayings, humor and slapstick interludes.
The classic adventure cinema with its exciting back and forth is present at every second in Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny. In the end, however, the film bids farewell to nostalgia and takes a similar risk like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with its aliens and flying saucers. No spoilers, but you haven’t seen THAT in any Indiana Jones movie.
Indiana Jones 5 is a fitting conclusion and boasts the most incredible moment of the series
Once more should the ending is the biggest point of contention be. The Wheel of Destiny is often in the tradition of the old films, but ultimately does not linger in nostalgic flashbacks. Just like its main character, Indiana Jones has aged and the new installment in the adventure series explores this change between varied action scenes with a great deal of empathy.

Although the new Indy is not quite as brave and complex as Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi in dealing with Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, there are many fine, clever nuances and extremely entertaining passages that further develop the character. As with Logan – The Wolverine, Mangold has created a blockbuster that touches on the Finiteness of a larger than life hero approaching.
Whether you like Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny or not can be answered with one question: How do you feel about the last minutes of part 4? Mangold goes one step further and creates one of the most incredible moments in the 42-year history of the series. Just discovering where the film is headed is one of the most exciting things you’ll see in cinemas this year.
