When a Russian mafioso and his attack dog get in, it can be a long week for the taxi driver. At least that’s what Devid Striesow feels in the new film Roxy, which has a genre mix of thriller, drama and comedy also entertains Quentin Tarantino fans.

Roxy is about taxi driver Thomas, who lives a deliberately inconspicuous existence between his job routine and his collection of Matchbox cars. That changes radically when the Russian arms dealer Levan (Vakho Chachanidze) sits down in his car. Thomas’ life suddenly moves between assassinations and fake passports. He develops a special relationship with Levan’s wife Liza (Camilla Borghesani) and his son Vova (Raphael Zhambakiyev).

On paper, Roxy’s story could be a hard-hitting thriller, a dark drama or a hard-hitting action comedy. In the cinema, Dito Tsintsadze’s film (The Man from the Embassy) is a mixture of all three genres. Thomas’ quirky nature causes fits of laughter, even when he talks about his family’s Stasi past.
Tarantino humor and film noir elements allow the laughing audience to slide into a film with something bitterly evil at its core. Because when Striesow’s character crosses the line between observer and accomplice, the audience’s laughter gets stuck in their throats. Is Roxy a fan of the German philistine? A crime comedy? Or a disturbing portrait of a psychopath? Tsintsadze leaves it open. It doesn’t hurt the entertainment factor.
