The cinema year 2023 had a clear winner at the box office. There was no way around Barbie. Not even the Nintendo high-flyer The Super Mario Bros. Movie could compete with that pink fantasy comedy keep up. The film has now also arrived in home cinemas. From Friday you can stream Barbie on WOW.

The idea of a Barbie film has been floating around Hollywood since the 1980s. Over time the project has… different forms assumed. In the meantime, actresses such as Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer have been linked to the title role. Ultimately, Margot Robbie won the contract.
A Barbie movie? Can this work? That’s what a lot of people asked themselves when the film was announced – and with indie darling Greta Gerwig as the director. Won’t happen here incredible talent wasted on an extremely expensive Mattel commercial? No, definitely not. Barbie is terrific.

Of course, the film cannot separate itself from its toy origins. But Gerwig and her creative team take advantage of the controversial figure’s legacy and negotiate it all in one exciting pop culture remix new, which also contains an incredible love for cinema, such as musicals from the 1950s.

But Barbie also works wonderfully if you’re not that deeply immersed in film history. The film is incredibly entertaining, funny and also very touching. The biggest scene stealer is Ryan Gosling as Ken. Just his song I’m Just Kenwhich sounds to the aforementioned dream ballet, is a monument of the film year 2023.
The fantasy comedy Barbie is nominated for eight Oscars – twice in one category
I’m Just Ken could even win the Oscar, but it gets Competition from your own team. Along with Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For? the song is nominated for Best Song. In addition, Barbie is competing in six other categories: Best Costumes, Best Production Design, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay and – the king category – Best Film.
