The statement may provide an explanation as to why the home search was conducted only now. The federal police FBI took classified documents from Donald Trump’s home in Florida.

At least one of the former president of the United States Donald Trump’s of lawyers signed a statement to the US Department of Justice in June, according to which all classified materials stored in the Trump mansion would be returned to the country’s administration.

The written statement was issued after a senior Justice Department security official visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in early June and met with two of Trump’s lawyers. The meeting had discussed the handling of classified information.

The existence of the signed statement suggests that Trump and his team have not been completely honest with federal investigators about the material. It may also explain why the federal police’s FBI search warrant referred to legislation related to obstruction of criminal investigation, the paper writes.

The existence of the statement also answers, at least in part, the question of why the decision to search the home was made only months after the Justice Department began investigating the matter by trying to hold discussions with Trump and his team.

The FBI searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate earlier this week and took eleven sets of classified documents with them. According to the Ministry of Justice, some of the documents were classified as top secret.

Neither the US Department of Justice nor Trump’s representatives have yet commented on the New York Times’ information.
