Now all police officers have access to stun guns – to fill the gap between pepper spray and guns

Two laser points show where the hit will be and the gun fires projectiles, one plus pole and one minus pole.

– It’s about 50,000 volts initially until a circuit is established, then it drops down to 2,500 volts. Electricity affects the sensory and motor nervous systems. It hurts a lot and you can’t move. But it does not affect the autonomic nervous system, which regulates, for example, breathing, says Jens Lindström Lönn.

Gives the police time to intervene

The person who is hit cannot move for a few seconds, which gives the police time to intervene safely, he believes.

The weapon has been tested and evaluated by the police authority for several years. Last year, the task force gained access to it on a permanent basis, and this year it is being rolled out across the agency.

Close to half of all police officers on external duty in Sörmland have attended training for the new stun gun. By the end of the year, the plan is for everyone to have completed it.

The right tool at the right time

The police use different scenarios in the training, which should then be used as aids and support in real situations.

– Then the police on the spot recognize themselves and then know how to act and evaluate the various aids and when they are applicable, says Jens Lindström Lönn.

Unclear about reduced need for firearms

According to the police national evaluation could ordinary firearms be avoided in individual cases, but it was not possible to see statistically that the stun gun reduced the need for firearms.

All usage of how the stun gun has been used is stored in a server.

In the clip, Jens Lindström Lönn talks about the risk of injury that exists and how it is with both pacemakers and pregnant women.
